Ryukoku University, founded in the spirit of Jodo Shinshu, has set “self-reflection and altruism” as the basic concept for the celebration of its 380th anniversary. Devised as part of the celebration is a project to establish a center for commitment to research and embodiment of the Buddhist SDGs, an approach to accomplishing a sustainable society from the perspective of Buddhism, and playing a pivotal role in social business. After talking with Prof. Yunus, the university has reached an agreement on the establishment of the Yunus Social Business Research Center (YSBRC).
While asking ourselves about the significance of “self-reflection and altruism,” we would like to play an important role in accomplishing the SDGs by fulfilling our responsibilities as a university in the fields of education, research, and social contribution.
We believe that the foundation of the YSBRC will enable us to gain an even more community-based future perspective of social business together with community stakeholders.
At the center, we would like to learn from Prof. Yunus and from the Yunus Social Business Centers around the world, and lead Japan in the realm of social business theory, thereby contributing to the achievement of the SDGs. Specifically, we will provide support for research and social activities that will lead to the implementation of social business in communities, while working on the development of university-community partnership projects. We plan to place our particular focus on the development of projects in which the ambitions of young people will be attained. As a member of the network of the 97 Yunus Social Business Centers across the world, including the YSBRC, we will take advantage of support from the Yunus Center and other organizations toward expanding collaborative activities.
The center has been established to commit to research on and embodiment of the SDGs from the perspective of Buddhism, provide academic support for research on social business and implementation of such business in communities, fulfill the university’s responsibilities related to social contribution, and foster human resources who can engage in multi-generation and multi-cultural partnership.
